Mimail.Q: a new mail virus epidemic and how to deal with it
Many of our readers this morning have witnessed a nightmare stream of trash that has fallen into their boxes. Judging by my own impressions, I can say that the scale of the current viral epidemic cannot be compared with any previous one.
This is due to a new modification of the mail worm, Mimail.Q. Here are some of the details Kaspersky Lab reported about him today:
“Mimail.Q “… differs in cryptographic protection from antiviruses and has already caused isolated cases of infection among users. Kaspersky Lab predicts that the epidemic will expand in the coming days and recommends that users update their anti-virus program immediately.
“Mimail.Q “spreads via e-mail in letters of various contents (several dozen variants) and arbitrary names of attached files. The worm consists of two parts: the “dropper” (the module for installing the main part) and the carrier (the main part).
If the user was careless to launch a file attached to an infected message, the dropper displays a window with a false error message, copies itself to the Windows directory under the SYS32 name.EXE and registers in the autostart key of the system registry. After that, it unpacks the main part of the worm (file OUTLOOK.EXE) and launches it for execution.
An important distinction “Mimail.Q “is the use of cryptographic algorithms to protect against antivirus (polymorphism). Each time an infected computer is restarted, the worm changes the encryption key in such a way that the sent copies of the malware look different each time. This, in turn, requires the installed antivirus to decrypt files.
The main part of the worm performs several functions at once. First, mailing copies of “Mimail.Q “. To do this, the worm scans the contents of the disk and reads email addresses from them. Then, infected messages are sent using the built-in mail mechanism.
Secondly, the main part opens a loophole for cybercriminals to the infected computer using ports 6667, 3000, 80, 1433 and 1434. Through these ports the worm receives commands from its “masters” and sends data on the execution of commands to anonymous mailboxes of public e-mail systems.
Third, “Mimail.Q “, like previous versions, collects information about the accounts of PayPal and E-Gold payment systems installed on the computer and sends access codes to them to the same mailboxes.
Finally, the worm’s code contains threats against public mail systems if the “Mimail.Q “boxes:
*** GLOBAL WARNING: if any free email company or hosting company will close / filter my email / site accounts, it will be DDoS?ed in next version. WARNING: centrum.cz will be DDoS?ed in next versions, coz they have closed my mimail-email account. Who next? ***
Mimail protection procedures.Q using decryption have already been added to the Kaspersky Anti-Virus database.
Here are the news. In addition to the fact that now is the time to update the database of your antivirus program, remember that if you are going to write a response to insults to the one whose e-mail you see in the from field, it is better to carefully review the headers before. It is possible that you will write to the wrong address and only increase the clutter of the Network.
