Electronic passports: first prototypes
In the near future, another passport reform awaits us: in order to comply with the requirements of the European Union for the fight against crime, the current Russian foreign passports will be replaced with new ones containing biometric chips and, accordingly, storing information about the owner. The passports of citizens of countries belonging to the united Europe are also subject to replacement. What will these new passports be like??
The first prototype has already been created and presented this week by Infineon and Philips. The smart card embedded in the last page of the prototype of the new passport contains 32 KB of memory. However, in passports launched into mass production, the memory is planned to be expanded to 64 KB, 20 KB of which will be allocated for a digitized photograph of the owner, twice 10 KB for prints of two thumbs. The remaining 24 KB of memory will be allocated for service information and the operating system. No compression algorithms will be used for photographs or fingerprints – the fact that files are not compressed in police databases played an important role in deciding on this issue. Future passports also do not use the so-called biometric templates (templates), which simplify the process of personal identification. They refused to use them because there are already too many different patterns in the world that are incompatible with each other.
From a technical point of view, a biometric chip for a passport is no different from smart cards, the technologies of which are already well developed. And the transition of Europe, North America, and later Russia, to contactless biometric smart cards in passports, is very beneficial for their manufacturers. But there is another problem – how to protect the information stored in a smart card from unauthorized modification and, roughly speaking, the chips themselves from replacement. As a result of trilateral cooperation – smart card manufacturers, document manufacturers and the government, on the one hand, special chips and antennas, methods for their installation in passports, and regulatory documents regulating these processes have been developed.
The final decision has not yet been made on how exactly the chip will be attached – on a separate page or in the cover, so the demonstrated prototypes are made in two versions. By the way, the USA chose the cover, and Holland, the home country of Philips, chose a separate page.
Pilot projects are planned for next year in Australia, Canada, USA, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, during which the performance of prototype passports in contactless border terminals of airports will be assessed.
If everything goes well (and this, as you know, happens very rarely), then, in addition to the fight against international terrorism, you will see that the queues at the passport control post will become smaller, and the border guards will not need to touch the passports (the memories of SARS are still fresh in my memory and mysterious white powders).
