Dramatically Changing AMD’s Processor Plans for the Next Two Years

AMD’s plans for release of processors have not undergone such a massive update since spring. In addition, the appearance of a whole list of new code names for processor cores is accompanied by unambiguous comments, which can be used to judge the timing of putting into mass operation lines for the production of chips with 90 nm process technology with SOI technology (silicon-on-insulator). The update of the company’s processor roadmap almost coincided with a meeting of company representatives with Wall Street analysts.

As you remember, AMD unveiled three new chips in May, expected to arrive in 2021: Athens, a 90nm version of Opteron chips for servers and workstations; San Diego – 90nm successor to the Athlon 64 FX desktop processor series; Odessa – 90 nm Mobile Athlon 64. However, this is a trifle compared to a whole list of new chips at once in the updated roadmap for 2021 – 2021.

According to the diagram presented by AMD, it is noticeable that all the efforts of the developers will be directed to launching the 90 nm process technology in the second half of the year, so for the first half of 2021 the company has planned to release only two new processor cores. One of them will be Mobile Athlon 64 based on 0.13 micron process technology with SOI, carried over by AMD from the current quarter. The second will be the Newcastle core – an updated Athlon 64 for desktop PCs with 130nm norms and SOI. Its main difference from the current Athlon 64 will be better optimization of the core for desktop PC functions, as well as the die size – about 150 kv. mm.

If all goes according to plans, the second half of 2021 will be an era of mass migration for AMD to 90nm process technology. Athens core, previously marketed as a 90nm / SOI solution for one to eight processor servers and workstations, is now the new Opteron 800 series. Troy and Venus chips, respectively, will be 90nm / SOI upgrades to Opteron 200 and 100 series processors. It should be noted that all three updates to the Opteron family will be presented in two versions, each – basic and “low power”. A year later, in the second half of 2021, AMD intends to once again update the Opteron series of server chips, however, it is not yet clear if this will be a new generation of cores or just new revisions of the known chips. Thus, the Egypt server core will most likely replace Athens, Italy will replace the Troy chip, and Denmark will replace the Venus core. The line of 32-bit Athlon MP chips will not be updated and most likely in 2021 will peacefully live out its last days.

The second half of 2021 will bring the release of three new processor cores for the desktop platform: the 90nm / SOI San Diego core will be an upgrade for the AthlonFX line, the 90nm / SOI core Winchester will replace Newcastle, and Paris will replace the current Barton core in 32-bit Athlon processors. XP. The fate of the Duron brand remains uncertain, it is quite possible that we say goodbye to it forever.

The second half of 2021 will bring two new names for the desktop platform: Toledo and Palermo, corresponding to the current AthlonFX and Athlon XP lines. It is interesting to note that the update for the Athlon 64 Winchester core has not yet been determined. It is hard to believe that it will not be updated for so long, most likely, over time, an addition will follow in this part of the roadmap (who knows, maybe this is where the 65 nm process technology first appears?).

The family of mobile processors from AMD will be replenished in the second half with the Odessa core – the first 90 nm / SOI mobile version of Athlon 64, as well as the 0.13 micron / SOI Dublin core, which replaces the current 32-bit Athlon XP-M.

In 2021, the Odessa core will be replaced by the Oakville variant of which nothing is known yet (most likely, Oakville will be a mobile version of the 90nm Athlon64 Newcastle core for desktop PCs). AMD’s 32-bit mobile platform will be supplemented in the second half of 2021 with a 90nm version of Trinidad, which will replace the Dublin chip.

Thus, it is worth noting that rumors about the death of 32-bit AMD processors were, to put it mildly, exaggerated, and at least in versions for mobile and desktop platforms, they will survive until the end of 2021; moreover, will be ported to 90 nm / SOI process technology.

P.S. It is too early to comment on the “geography” of the new names of AMD chips, but one cannot fail to note their obvious bias towards the European region. 😉
