It’s amazing how bizarre engineering can sometimes take shape. Here is the SpeckNet Consortium of five Scottish universities proposing to investigate the possibility of creating a computing network based on microscopic nodes with sensory, computational and communication functions.
Microscopic nodes, called “speck” (grain), will have to measure no more than a cubic millimeter, have built-in power supplies. Theoretically, they can be bought in a store by weight, then scattered wherever necessary (or anywhere) and get a network of sensors with computational capabilities. For example, such network grains can be used to diagnose blood flow in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
Researchers plan to spend 12 to 15 years developing microscopic networks. There are a lot of tasks to solve: develop energy-efficient communication protocols, renewable energy sources, radio frequency or optical communication interfaces.
