300mm AMD Fab 36, officially: finance, partners, plans…

So, the topic about the construction site of the new AMD factory, which has been actively discussed in the press in recent weeks, is closed. Yesterday evening, the company held the official groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new factory – AMD Fab 36, focused on the production of chips with norms of 65 nm and less, on silicon wafers with a diameter of 300 mm.

AMD Fab 36 will be built on the outskirts of Dresden, Saxony and is part of AMD Dresden Fab 36 LLC & Co. KG. The production lines of the new factory will be located near the workshops of the already operating AMD Fab 30.

AMD Fab 36 is expected to start mass production in 2021. The production will employ about 1000 workers, mainly highly qualified engineers and specialists.

The new factory AMD Fab 36 will be equipped with what is called “the latest technology”, in particular, the production lines will be equipped with AMD’s patented third generation automatic production systems (Automated Precision Manufacturing, APM 3.0). It is assumed that at the time the factory reaches its design capacity in 2021, it will be able to produce up to 13 thousand 300 mm plates per month; then this figure will be increased to 20 thousand plates monthly.

As for the financial flows that form the capex for the construction of the factory, they are expected to total about $ 2.8 billion., at the same time, external financing in the amount of about $ 1 billion.will consist of direct subsidies and loans guaranteed by the governments of Germany and the federal state of Saxony. About $ 700 million. ($ 659 million.) will be financed by a consortium of banks, of which about 80% is covered by government guarantees. Approximately $ 500 million. will be received in the form of official subsidies and grants ($ 141 million.) from the German and Saxon governments (still awaiting the approval of the EU committee), plus, about $ 320 million. the subsidies will be provided by a group of Saxon and European investors led by M + W Zander.

Of course, finances will be allocated gradually. As you know, the cost of building a modern factory is more than 70% of the cost of purchasing high-tech equipment, and the step-by-step allocation of funds for the construction of Fab36 will help the company to more easily bear such a cost burden.

It is also interesting to note that during the ceremony to kick off the construction of the factory, Hector Ruiz, AMD President and CEO, stated that between IBM’s 65nm process on 300mm wafers at a factory in East Fishkill, New York, and a similar AMD process technology on Fab36 will have significant similarities. Thus, despite the refusal of AMD representatives to comment further, it can be assumed that IBM will remain AMD’s largest technology partner for the coming years.
