Samsung is preparing for the official announcement of a new network DRAM

EBN News, is preparing a new line of DRAM for network
equipment. The lineup will be represented by 288 Mbit DDR SDRAM chips with architecture
32-Mbit x 9, 18-Mbit x 18 and 8-Mbit x 36. Engineering chip designs are planned
for the 4th quarter of 2021

Despite the lack of an official announcement of new chips, specifications and timing
the beginning of the supply of samples are already available on the company’s website.

288 Mbit chips – the second generation of network DRAM chips. The first generation was
introduced in 2021, the chip density was (and still is) 256 Mbit. Then
Samsung and Toshiba have agreed to release compatible FCRAM versions that match
specifications jointly developed by Toshiba and Fujitsu. In Korean terms
the manufacturer, these chips are called Network-DRAM, the developers of the specification call
her FCRAM. Samsung Network-DRAM is designed for use in switches
and 10 Gbps OC-192 routers. The usual
DRAM including 200 and 400 MHz DDR SDRAM chips may well meet the requirements
to memory for equipment of existing networks, OC-48, but no more.

Despite the existing competition in the network storage sector, Fujitsu, Toshiba
and Samsung, they are united by the fact that the companies are trying to keep up with another standard,
joint development of Infineon Technologies and Micron Technology – chips with architecture
RLDRAM.

Network DRAM manufacturers also have business problems: conventional DRAM
will be used for some time in communication equipment. With the exception of
long-haul networks, a decline in the communications industry
slowed down the pace of deployment of OC-192 systems in metropolitan and global networks, respectively,
as analysts note, the timing of the implementation of OC-768 networks with a throughput
capacity of 40 Gbps.

In fact, the market for wired networks does not change – due to oversaturation of sectors
urban and global networks. Sales of systems for wired networks, according to IC
Insights will remain at the same level in 2021. Scottsdale estimates,
the market of chips for equipment used in wired networks will grow by 5%.
A slightly different situation in the market of chips for equipment used in wireless
networks – the pace of implementation of such networks will lead to 20% growth in sectors in 2021 and 26%
growth in 2021. All analysts, however, agree on one thing: manufacturers
network storage will compete for a very small share of the overall market
memory: according to some estimates, the network DRAM sector is only 1-2% of the total
memory market. With the increasing pace of adoption of OC-192 systems, Samsung appears to have
every chance of leadership at the first stage.
