Transmeta unveils details about Efficeon core

At Microprocessor Forum, Transmeta officially unveils its new TM8000 family of integrated mobile processors. Initially, the Efficeon family will include three chips: TM8600, with 1 MB L2 cache, TM8300 with 512 KB of L2 cache and TM8600 in a small form factor package – TM8620. Efficeon chips will appear in mass quantities this quarter and will be available in versions with clock speeds of 1.0 GHz, 1.1 GHz, 1.2 GHz and 1.3 GHz.

The new processor core processes 256-bit VLSI (bit very long instruction word) instructions, while. the core can process up to 8 internal instructions per clock cycle. Of course, the new chip, by analogy with the Crusoe, runs under the control of special software that converts x86 instructions into VLIW commands.

By analogy with AMD Athlon 64 processors, Efficeon series chips have an integrated memory controller supporting DDR400. In addition, the chip has integrated support for AGP 4X, as well as a HyperTransport bus for connecting the south bridge.

The area required for placing the TM8600 chip together with the NVIDIA nForce3 Go 120 chipset on the board is about 2066 sq. mm, which allows us to talk about the creation of small-sized PCs. The TM8000 core itself has an area of ​​119 sq. mm in production with 130 nm process technology.
