Fujitsu Laboratories: the next step in the development of fuel cells
Fujitsu Laboratories has announced
on the development of a prototype passive fuel cell for laptops. Application
in the element of new materials allows you to use as a fuel source
30% methanol, which makes it possible to increase the operating time of laptops, PDAs and mobile
phones, as well as increase the capacity of passive sources (forced
fuel injection, based entirely on the influence of gravity and natural
convection; optimal for small systems).
The need to develop new fuel cells is obvious: as soon as
new technologies, the performance of portable devices increases, respectively,
the need for more capacious power supplies is also increasing. Lithium ion
batteries commonly used in systems today,
have approached the limits of their capacities, which only increases the importance of the soonest
development of new batteries. In terms of energy density, fuel
cells surpass lithium ion sources by 5-10 times, and from the point of view
users, fuel cells are much more profitable, because, firstly, they are cheaper,
secondly, it is easier to refill.
Today, fuel cells are made of fluorinated polymers (electrolytic
material); however, fluorinated electrolytes are absorbed too quickly by the molecules
methanol contained in the fuel, therefore, when using concentrated
of fuel, fuel is lost during the generation process, resulting in a decrease in power
battery. Fujitsu has developed a new technology for membrane electrode material
node (MEA). Aromatic hydrocarbon material, slowing penetration
methanol, coated with a highly active (platinum-based) catalyst of high density
with methanol suppression functions, which can reduce fuel loss by
1/10 compared to conventional fluorinated polymers.
It is this new material that makes it possible to use in fuel cells
30% methanol (until now, this concentration was considered too high);
the presented prototype of the source with 300 ml of 30% methanol allows the laptop to work
continuously for 8-10 hours. In addition, the thickness of the element has been reduced to 15
mm – at an output power of 15 W. The company is currently planning to continue
experimenting with materials to increase battery capacity even more.
