Passion in the DVD Forum: who wins, HD-DVD or BD-ROM?

Discord and Confusion Reigns Against Members of the DVD Forum Preparing to Adopt Optical Media Format Specifications. This is due to two competing formats, with some members of the DVD Forum taking part in both: HD-DVD (high-definition DVD) and BD-ROM (Blu-ray Disc ROM). About 60 companies participated in the development of the first, and only ten companies participated in the development of Blu-ray, but half of this ten are in the senior weight category: Sony, Philips, Hitachi, Sharp and Samsung.

The reason that such passions have risen around the standards of the new generation is banal and simple: it’s all about the money that can be received for many years from royalties. And it is no longer possible to delay standardization: the need for high-capacity optical media is stimulated by the proliferation of high-quality video (HDTV). One HDTV movie will have to fit on one new generation disc.

Some believe that HD-DVD can provide a smooth transition to new discs along with the ubiquity of HDTV. The first HD-DVD drives should be on sale by the end of 2021, and BD-ROM drives in 2021, but they may not be compatible with the DVD Forum’s specifications.

The specification outlined by the DVD Forum Technical Commission contains H codecs.264, Windows Media9, MPEG-2, or a hybrid of MPEG-2 and H.264. The specification uses a shortwave (blue) light emitting diode laser. Much taken from AOD (Advanced Optical Disc), a joint development of Toshiba and NEC, compatible with DVD. The capacity of one HD-DVD media will be 15 GB for a single layer disc, 30 GB for a dual layer disc and 20 GB for a single layer rewritable disc, dual layer rewritable disc – from 35 to 40 GB.

Blu-ray specifications are not yet complete and are currently version number 0.nine. one.0-version of the specifications expected in the first quarter of 2021. Unlike HD-DVD, BD-ROM has dropped the new compression codecs and uses MPEG-2 and Dolby Digital (which are also used in HDTVs). It turns out that HD-DVD requires more electronics for transcoding video and audio, while BD-ROM uses a new, more capacious disc format and an even more advanced read / write system. BD-ROM disc thickness is 0.6mm, laser wavelength is 405nm, numerical aperture is 0.85. Accordingly, the capacity of a single layer BD-ROM should be 25 GB, a dual layer – 50 GB, however, due to more complex optics, BD-ROM drives are likely to cost a little more than HD-DVD.

Since the BD-ROM standard is not yet finally ready, its proponents have opted for the tactic of discouraging HD-DVD adoption. As a result, when voting in June, all 10 supporter companies (all of them are on the DVD Forum steering committee) voted against or abstained, only IBM, Intel, NEC, Time Warner and Toshiba voted in favor. Therefore, the HD-DVD vote was postponed for this week. It is difficult to predict how the situation will turn out this time: three new members have been admitted to the steering committee, and their votes may affect the outcome of the HD-DVD vote and the future of the industry.
