Samples of 90nm Transmeta Efficeon processors to appear in January
A very interesting announcement of the company’s second generation Efficeon processor plans was announced by an unnamed representative of Transmeta. As you know, the second generation of Efficeon processors will be produced at Fujitsu Microelectronics production facilities with 90 nm process technology. The start of mass production will begin no earlier than the second half of 2021, however, there is already encouraging news on this score.
According to the information that has appeared, the first samples of the base chip of the second generation of Efficeon, TM8800, will be received in January 2021. Unfortunately, Fujitsu’s 90nm CMOS process technology has not yet been tested on serial batches of chips and Transmeta is not yet fully confident that the planned release dates will be met. However, obtaining the first experimental crystals will undoubtedly affect the reputation of both companies.
Recall that the second generation Efficeon processors will be presented in three versions: the base TM8800, the inexpensive TM8500 and the compact TM8820. All three chips will have 128 KB instruction cache, 64 KB data cache, 1 MB (TM8800 / TM8820) or 512 KB (TM8500) L2 cache. The chips will be produced in 783-pin FC-OBGA packages, and the application of the 90 nm technical process will reduce the die area to 68 sq. mm.
