First PCI Express Test Tests: NVIDIA NV34 and ATI RV380
Everyone writes about the upcoming appearance of graphics cards for the PCI Express 16x bus, everyone talks about the advantages of the new bus, however, so far everything is in theory. The PCI Express article … RV380 & FX5200, which appeared on the Chinese-language (according to my assumptions, Hong Kong) HKE PC site, sheds the first light on this question from a practical point of view.
Of course, you shouldn’t take it as the ultimate truth test tests of beta-versions of cards on chips with beta-versions of steppings and firmware, on a beta-version of the motherboard. However, interest in the first experiments with PCI Express 16x is no less.
So, the battle was arranged between out of nowhere PCI Express engineering samples of cards based on NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 chips (NV34, 0.15 μm, external AGP bridge => PCI Express, Hynix memory in a TSOP II package; chip / memory frequencies 275 MHz / 400 MHz) and ATI 9600XT (RV380, that is, RV360 + PCI Express, 0.13 μm, 128 MB 2.8 ns Samsung memory in a BGA package, 450 MHz core frequency).

The test system was built on a Gigabyte board (i915G + ICH6R chipset), 2.8E GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor (Prescott core, LGA 775, stepping A0), 512 MB Kingston DDR400 CL2 memory, running MS Windows XP Professional SP1.

As a comparative platform, we used APG versions of the cards, a motherboard based on the i875P + ICH5R bundle, 2.8С GHz Pentium 4 chip (Northwood), the same memory and operating system.
I don’t think that the results given below can be reasoned about anything, including the capabilities of the AGP => PCI Express bridge on a board with GeForce FX 5200, the overwhelming majority of components of the systems under consideration are too “raw”. For me, so far this is just another opportunity to look at “glands from the future”…
