OctigaBay 12K: Opteron Mass Supercomputer Candidate
Published three weeks ago in our news feed about a supercomputer created in college (by the way, fighting for university status) Virginia Tech, based on Apple G5 workstations, aroused considerable interest of our readers. We could not deny ourselves the pleasure of publishing the news that for the Supercomputing Conference 2021 symposium, which will be held from 15 to 21 November, the Canadian company OctigaBay has created an OctigaBay 12K supercomputer based on 12 AMD Opteron processors with a clock speed of 2.4 GHz.
The OctigaBay 12K consists of six dual-socket modules mounted in a 3U server rack with 8 Gb / s interconnect bandwidth and 1.2 ns latency. One such OctigaBay 12K rack achieves a throughput of 58 billion floating point operations per second (Gflops), and it is possible to combine up to 1000 server racks into one cluster with a total performance of 60 Tflops (trillions of floating point operations per second). Latency of server racks connections does not exceed 150-200 ns.
It should be noted that the company preferred to develop the communication interface between different processor modules and server racks on its own based on FPGA Xilinx Virtex II Pro, instead of using Gigabit Ethernet switches.
Such masters of supercomputer engineering as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories have shown for the development of a start-up Canadian company, and it is planned to use them in the North American project for studying the human genome.
Despite the abundance of interesting technological ideas embodied in the OctigaBay 12K, the future of the system depends on whether the company can achieve an optimal price ratio to successfully compete with low-cost server blades and clusters based on them from Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Sun. So far, the OctigaBay 12K wins in performance, and blades using Gigabit Ethernet do not meet the bandwidth and latency requirements of supercomputers, but the day is not far off when server blades will move from PCI-X to PCI Express, which means , will make a significant leap forward.
