1 trillion. bits per square inch – using nano-imprint lithography

At the Science Society of Materials Science Seminar in Boston these days, Hitachi representatives in North America announced the development of a new process for creating storage media from tiny nanosized cobalt (Co) and palladium (Pd) islands on a silicon dioxide (SiO2, quartz) substrate. The technology itself, perhaps, would not be so interesting, since a lot has already been created in this direction (development of IBM – Millipede, carbon nanotubes with magnetic filling, organic memory of HP Labs – Pedot, etc.), however, in addition to purely academic interest (it is said about the possibility of achieving a recording density of 1 trillion. bit per sq. inch), there are also prospects for commercial use – such nanostructures can be created on an industrial scale using nano-imprint lithography.

Thus, nano-imprint lithography, having barely managed to declare itself in a full voice, can get itself a very good application. Unlike the approaches listed above to create new high-density media, Hitachi’s technology, developed in collaboration with IBM, uses traditional methods to control the orientation of magnetic domains (the only exceptions are the aforementioned magnetic nanotubes). In the described process, nanoscopic magnetic domains are created with a vertically directed magnetization vector (relative to the surface of the quartz substrate). Previously, IBM researchers reported reaching a recording density of 200 Gbps per 1 sq. inch.

Second, the process describes the approach of creating “islands” that isolate magnetic domains at sizes smaller than the limiting ones for thermodynamic fluctuations (since magnetic domains are not at absolute zero, but at room temperature, there is a limit to the natural dimensions of the magnetic domain-structure with an ordered vector magnetization of individual molecules, less than which there is a spontaneous change in magnetization due to thermodynamic fluctuations).

In the prototypes created to date, the dimensions of the nanoislands are 5-15 nm, the distance between them is 37 nm. At the German University of Duisburg-Essen, they are working on the creation of similar nanoislands of iron and platinum, capable of self-organizing into regular hexagonal structures on the silicon surface. If it is possible to achieve good results, then as a result in the future it will be possible to talk about self-organizing carriers of information of very high density.
