HD DVD: seemingly accepted, but not everyone agrees
As we previously reported, the adoption of the new optical disc format, HD DVD, sparked real passion a week ago, fueled by the desire of influential industrialists to delay the distribution of HD DVD in order to facilitate the subsequent distribution of the not yet standardized Blu-ray Disk.
Nevertheless, the HD DVD proposed for adoption by Toshiba and NEC was nevertheless adopted at the meeting of the DVD Forum governing committee with a vote of 8 to 6.
As a reminder, HD DVD uses a short wavelength (blue) light source, but is similar to current DVDs. Single-sided HD DVD capacity is about 15-20GB. Blu-ray Disk (which is backed by Panasonic, Sony, Philips and Samsung) also uses a shortwave light source, but a different media structure, making it incompatible with modern DVDs, while HD DVD is backward compatible.
This is the third HD DVD vote: in the first two, the standard was never adopted. Even in the last vote, it was not without exaggeration: HD DVD was never able to get the required majority of votes, and if not for the recently introduced rule on the abolition of abstaining votes, the adoption of the standard would have dragged on even longer. And despite the fact that the problem has been formally resolved, the issue of adopting a new format has not been removed from the agenda.
