HIT Virginia Tech: High Tech in American Football
Once again, developers from Virginia Tech University (Virginia, USA) distinguished themselves by developing a system for controlling how hard a blow to the head is received by American football players (we will not give a detailed description of this game here, but we note that it is very traumatic). Earlier we reported that Virginia Tech became the first university to create an inexpensive supercomputer (Big Mac) based on Apple G5 systems, but now, apparently, they decided to take care of the health of their students – after all, many of them are addicted to spectacular games, and head injuries, as you know, can affect health (the ability to play in the future) and, importantly, the perception of educational material.
The system consists of several sensors (acceleration sensors), a microprocessor and a radio frequency transceiver unit that reports data from the playing field to the coach’s computer. The system is equipped with eight helmets that 38 different players wear periodically, and the National Institutes of Health assisted Virginia Tech with tuning it (researching the link between acceleration prior to concussion). The University has been using the system since the start of this season of games, and will use it in the Insight Bowl Cup Finals this Friday.
Each helmet contains six acceleration sensors that are triggered when the threshold load of 10 G (approximately 980 m / sq. c) in one of six directions (forward-backward, left-right, up-down). Overload data processed by a 10-bit ADC and a Hitachi H8 microprocessor is stored locally in 16 KB of RAM or, if possible, sent to a computer. The helmet also has 128 KB of flash memory.
Since medical scientists have long wanted to know what short-term overload (more precisely, a blow) a person can withstand without earning a concussion, the Virginia Tech initiative turned out to be very useful – before they had to use dummies, on which, by the way, the first version of the system was tested. Scientists have recorded several cases of impacts in 100 G, after which the athletes continued to play as if nothing had happened. In the future, when it will be possible to set the overload threshold, scientists hope to quickly establish the likelihood of an athlete’s concussion in order to provide them with first aid and exclude the possibility of finding them on the field when they have a poor understanding of what is wrong with them and where they are (and such precedents have already happened repeatedly).
