Intel and Samsung join IMEC
As Western media report today, Intel and Samsung joined Infineon, Philips Semiconductors and STMicroelectronics yesterday to develop 45nm and smaller process technology.
Financial support from the two largest manufacturers will have to help in the creation of an experimental 300-mm line at the European Interuniversity Microectronics Center (IMEC), turning this scientific project into an international.
In addition to the five already mentioned companies, Texas Instruments will participate in five of the seven planned research programs, the doors for the participation of other semiconductor chip manufacturers remain open.
As for the content of the research programs themselves, it is planned to develop germanium chips using CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor, CMOS) technology, in connection with which close cooperation with the Microelectronics Center of Stanford University is expected. The cost of building a research center is estimated at 84 million euros, plus several hundred million for the purchase of the necessary equipment. It is noteworthy that the US government and the EU headquarters have adopted restrictions on the export of IMEC technologies to China, which makes it impossible for Chinese scientists to participate in the project.
