The network created to connect computers gave rise to new types of computers to monitor and control their performance, but what is most interesting, a new type of computers themselves appeared – distributed computing systems. On the one hand, technological progress is now far ahead of the demands of even the most resource-intensive user programs, on the other hand, the wave of information in research work carried out in basic sciences, finance, geology and meteorology has long overwhelmed people at the forefront.
For example, the amount of data from the particle accelerator under construction at CERN for a year of its operation (it is planned to launch in 2021) will be enough to burn a stack of CD-ROMs as high as the Eiffel Tower. This is how a project called Grid was born, behind which hides several hundred computer centers around the world, connected to each other in a network and making up one large distributed supercomputer.
For the new supercomputer, however, there were immediately more applicants, in addition to CERN: the Grid will be used for geological calculations and for various kinds of architectural projects.
