CC / PP 1.0: W3C guidelines for creating universal content

The W3C hopes that, based on the indicative guidance for the application of CC / PP 1.0 it will be possible to create a universal meta-language for formatting electronic documents for full display on any platform, including in such mobile devices as pocket PCs and mobile phones.

As you know, the initial version of the HTML meta-language meant displaying formatted text on a personal computer screen, and only later (in particular, using styles) it became possible to expand the range of output of web pages. With careful use of HTML, it is possible to create documents that are displayed correctly in any operating system using any browser. However, PDAs and mobile phones have so far been deprived of attention (if the former, in principle, are able to display ordinary web pages in their window 320×240 or 320×320, and recently in 640×480, then the overwhelming majority of cell phones have to be content with wap-versions of sites , which do not always exist), although many already have the ability to access the Network.

Essentially, CC / PP is a standardized delivery context format containing a description of the screen resolution of a mobile device and its type (cell phone, PDA, etc.). d.). This means that web pages with CC / PP will be a little more difficult to create, however, hopefully, they will not have to be completely redone by hand – this will be done by the client browser application. It is possible, however, that pages contain special links (URIs) containing CC / PP context, instead of placing it in the body of the document. Such pages should also become independent of the type of platform on which they are created or on which they can be viewed.

It is possible that the introduction of CC / PP will lead to the need to revise the HTTP protocol. Until now, HTTP contained only descriptions of the type and capabilities of browsers, but not the context, capabilities and type of devices. Since CC / PP uses RDF (one of the key specifications of the Semantic Web), it has two important advantages: extensible decentralized vocabularies (vocabulary) of terms, in which you can add the capabilities of new devices and the integration of information from different sources. In particular, one of the CC / PP dictionaries for mobile phones is the UAProf (User Agent Profile) specifications, developed by the Open Mobile Alliance (and previously by the WAP Forum). Decentralization means that mobile phones provide their UAProf profiles to servers, and they are available via JCP (Java Community Process).

The next version of CC / PP will describe how to use different protocols (HTTP and SOAP) to modify and transfer CC / PP contexts. Firms such as Boeing, DaimlerChrysler Research, Ericsson, HP, IBM, INRIA, MobileAware, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic, SAP, Sky, Sony, Sun and Volantis have shown interest in the activities of the W3C Device Independence Working Group.
