VIA to Launch 90nm 2GHz Esther Microprocessors at IBM Plant
VIA announced that it has signed an agreement with IBM to manufacture microprocessors based on the Esther core (also known as C5Y, the next generation of microprocessors after the C4 or C5X-Nehemiah). VIA microprocessors with an Esther core will be manufactured using 90nm SOI CMOS processes (SOI-silicon-on-insulator, silicon-on-insulator; CMOS – CMOS, complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor) using low-k (low dielectric constant) insulation films at the 300mm plant in East Fishkill, NY.
Esther microprocessors are expected to reach 2GHz clock speeds while keeping power consumption flat. Deliveries are due to start in the second half of this year.
The former partner of VIA, the Taiwanese company TSMC, will continue to release VIA microprocessors on the C3 and C4 cores, sets of basic logic (chipsets), communication products, network and multimedia solutions.
