XGI claims 5-10% of the global desktop graphics market next year
As you know, a newcomer to the graphics chip market, XGI Technology, which debuts its solutions this month with the Volari GPU trademark, is attracting a lot of attention precisely because of its low popularity. Agree, it is not so often that a newcomer to such a high-tech market not only comes out with top-end solutions, but also promises to provide about 5-10% of the world market for desktop video cards next year!
Chris Lin, President of XGI Technology, made such a bold statement the other day. In his statement, Mr. Lin said that in the first quarter of 2021, monthly sales of graphics chips under the Volari brand will amount to about NT $ 300 million. (approximately $ 8.80 million.), and the monthly shipments of XP-series graphics chips for mobile PCs already amount to this amount. However, the sales volumes of the XP mobile family are not surprising, since they are nothing more than a series of chips, the rights to which were acquired by XGI with the purchase of the graphics division of Trident Microsystems this summer.
Very little is known about the new company so far. Of course, everyone is already aware that 99.99% of XGI’s assets are owned by SiS, that Volari series chips are manufactured at UMC facilities in compliance with the 0.13-micron technical process, that Asustek, Club-3D will become the company’s closest partners in promoting ready-made solutions, CP Technology, Gigabyte and MSI.
However, reliable data, for example, about the composition of the engineering team of the development team of the Volari family, are only rumors, and even retelling them is not recommended.
It is surprising, first of all, the fact that the new company, quite scanty in comparison with the giants NVIDIA and ATI, has such a clear program to promote its brand and plans for the future. Thus, the President of XGI notes that the European market will become the most priority market for the company in the near future, since it is much easier to find an adequate partner here. Referring to the company’s immediate plans, in particular the issues of migration from the AGP 8X bus to PCI Express, Mr. Lin noted that XGI will announce the PCI Express bridge in January, however, he does not plan to release a full line of chips with PCI Express support until the fourth quarter of 2021. In his opinion, by that time, solutions with PCI Express will hardly make up 25% of the total graphics market.
