Canon SED TVs: debut in 2021
Very interesting news was brought by yesterday’s release of Nihon Keizai Shimbun: it is reported that Canon is preparing to debut in the LCD TV market. To do this, according to the newspaper, in the spring of 2021, Canon intends to form a joint venture with Toshiba on a 50% – 50% basis, which will begin the mass production of SED displays in 2021.

Schematically, the principle of operation of the new technology is better described in comparison with the operation of a CRT (cathode-ray tube) display. As you know, a conventional cathode tube uses one electron gun per color to form an image. SED technology, in turn, uses a large number of tiny cannons sandwiched between a small gap of two glass plates. Accordingly, a layer of glowing phosphor is located on the front plate. For reference: a plasma display emits something like a fluorescent light, an LCD uses a backlight.
Company officials argue that SED technology is more modern and more advanced than current LCD and PDP technologies. Light-emitting SED technology does not need the backlighting of conventional LCD panels, for example. At the same time, the radiation intensity of SED panels is significantly higher than that of plasma screens, while the thickness of new products is only a few centimeters – even less than that of LCD and PDP panels of the corresponding diagonal. Another plus of SED technology is high efficiency, in fact, the power consumption of such panels is half that of comparable plasma screens.
Not without drawbacks: as you understand, the technology of mass production of such panels cannot be inexpensive at first. It is already known that a similar technology will be used in mass production by Mitsubishi Electric and Hitachi.
The first TVs, which will ship under the brands of both companies from 2021, are expected to initially have a diagonal of about 40 inches. Panel production will be established at Toshiba’s factory in Hyogo Prefecture. Currently, this factory is engaged in the production of CRT tubes, however, by the fall of 2021, production will be suspended and modernized. The expected monthly production of SED panels will be approximately 400-500 thousand displays.
In terms of markets for Canon-branded products, the company initially focuses on export operations outside of Japan, mainly in the United States. It will be quite simple to do this, since the company already has an extensive distribution network of digital photo and film cameras. Toshiba, in turn, intends to focus on the domestic Japanese market.
