Microsoft is preparing a single standard for music playback… CPRM is coming?
A group of companies that includes Microsoft and Universal Music plans to develop a unified standard to facilitate the distribution of music and video, the CDR Info website reported. More precisely, the Content Reference Forum aims to develop a standard that enables owners of multimedia devices to play music “or
other digital content encoded in a specific format “on any device and in any country (subject, of course, to certain obligations such as royalties and copyright).
Claiming that the large number of multimedia content formats in use today have resulted in a lack of compatibility among playback devices, the group published the first set of standards for data posted on the Internet. So, for example, devices that support this standard will receive the URL of the desired
object (composition or clip) instead of the file itself; after which, after clicking on the link, the device will receive, for example, a musical composition in the required format – and … on the terms negotiated by the content owner.
The initiative group itself includes ARM, ContentGuard, Macrovision, Microsoft, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Universal Music Group and VeriSign. The standard will be reviewed by all these companies, after which, by mid-2021, it will be available for licensing.
Maybe, of course, I’m suspicious, but at some point it seemed that somewhere behind the horizon a CPRM shadow flashed … However, it may be too early to be afraid – the standard may not be adopted. Equipment manufacturers may ultimately simply decide that it makes much more sense to promote proprietary technologies, as this forces consumers to buy equipment from them, rather than
play content on competitor’s equipment.
