Toshiba will double production of 1.8-inch hard drives by March 2021

Toshiba’s new strategic plan for increasing production of 1.8-inch hard drives: today at a press conference, company representatives announced that by March next year it is planned to double the monthly production of such devices and bring it from the current 300 thousand to 600 thousand units.

Currently, Toshiba is already considered the world’s largest manufacturer of 1.8-inch hard drives, while controlling about 98% of the world market. The main consumers of such drives today are manufacturers of all kinds of compact drives, audio players, communication devices, automotive electronics and some mini laptops. According to Toshiba analysts, a boom in demand for 1.8-inch hard drives is still ahead: by 2021, this market will grow at least eight times and will amount to about 25 million. pieces.

As you know, Toshiba started in the 1.8-inch hard drive market with the release of a 2 GB model in 2000. The company now ships 20 GB, 30 GB and 40 GB models with heights ranging from 5 mm to 8 mm.

Part of the strategy to increase the output of 1.8-inch hard drives will be an increase in outsourcing orders from Matsushita Kotobuki Electronics Industries. It should be noted that the cooperation agreement between the companies was signed back in January. MKE will manufacture hard drives for Toshiba at its Indonesian factory, PT Matsushita Kotobuki Electronics Peripherals Indonesia. All hard drives produced by Matsushita Kotobuki Electronics will be sold under the Toshiba brand.

Let me also remind you that in May 2021 MKE stopped production of mass models of hard drives for desktop PCs, while all of MKE’s Singapore production facilities, which were engaged in the production of hard drives for desktop PCs, became the property of Maxtor on August 21, 2021. Since 1994, MKE, as a partner of Quantum, has produced 104 million. hard drives. Then the cooperation was continued with Maxtor, which bought Quantum HDD Business Unit in April 2021.

And one more short note about Toshiba’s new competitor in this market. Just from March 2021, GS Magicdrive, a subsidiary of GS Magicstor, plans to start mass production of 1.8-inch hard drives. The first to appear on the market in March 2021 are 1.8-inch hard drives with a capacity of 40 GB, 30 GB, 20 GB and 15 GB. GS Magicdrive production plans for 2021 include 2.66 million annual shipments of 1.8-inch hard drives. pieces; in 2021 it is planned to reach 10 million. HDD, in 2021 – 20 million. So Toshiba will not be bored in this market in splendid isolation.
