ARM opens Secure JavaCard model, ready to issue licenses
ARM announced the other day that it is going to expand its business and start licensing software for smart cards based on Java. The company also announced the transfer of open transaction models based on the ARM11 OSI core (Open SystemC Initiative). Thus, ARM is no longer just a developer of microprocessor cores and embedded microprocessor technologies.
Intel chose a similar strategy in the early 1990s, conquering most of the PC market with its x86 processor architecture. Then, for the development of the industry and the growth of the market, the publicly available PCI and AGP standards were developed.
And although at first glance it seems that the market for embedded architectures (especially based on 32-bit ARM cores) in smart cards is small, this move by ARM is aimed at creating and conquering new markets that are promising in the future.
