Volari V8 Duo Ultra: first cards in retail, first test results

Looking through the resources of the XGI website this morning, I did not manage to notice any impressive changes that were promised, by the way, on December 8. The site is still adorned with descriptions of the company’s line of graphics chips posted on it a long time ago, there is a small list of partners in which for some reason only three companies are noted – AMD, C.P. Technology and Gigabyte; the last to be posted was a December 3 press release on the appointment of two new top-level executives. It even somehow becomes embarrassing: it seems like they promised, and on you, nothing…

Visits to partner sites also did not bring anything new: Club3D and C.P. Technology posted press releases about the start of shipments and the characteristics of their cards last week, they are all unchanged (both cards were also mentioned by us last week); the Gigabyte website remains completely silent, the morning run through Japanese news sources also did not bring anything. In general, the picture is very strange, I do not think that the conquest of the market will be successful if you start with a game of silence. Well, at least some information comes from Europe. In particular, French sources say that the first Club 3d XGI Volari Duo V8 Ultra / 256 CGX-UD86VTVD – 350/450 MHz – 256 MB DDR – VIVO – TV – DVI / VGA cards appear on sale in French and European retail, and German sources publish the first test results of the retail version of the card.

So, a card based on a dual DirectX 9 chip Volari V8 Duo Ultra from Club3D, equipped with 256 MB of DDR memory, with a chip / memory clock speed of 350 MHz / 900 MHz, will cost in France, according to the Clubic website, about 445 euros (including taxes). Attempts to find something similar in Russian retail were unsuccessful.

At the same time, the Hardware Tweaker site published yesterday the first review of the card from Club3D, although so far only in German. Reprinting exclusive images from a German website, I would like to immediately note the massiveness of the heat sinks located on both chips of the card, as well as the presence of two additional power connectors at once, familiar to us from the photos of the card prototypes from the Computex 2021 exhibition. All over it is felt that the heat dissipation of such a 2-head solution is still not bad…

As for the test results, it should be noted that the opponents for Club 3d XGI Volari Duo V8 Ultra / 256 were 3DConnect ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB (2.8 ns DDR memory, 325 MHz / 620 MHz chip / memory) and ATI PowerColor Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (2.8ns DDR memory, 380 MHz / 680 MHz chip / memory), test system – 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor (HyperThreading, overclocked @ 3500 MHz, 1000 MHz FSB), 1 GB dual-channel memory PC4000 CL2,5 (OCZ Technology), Asus P4C800 (i875P) motherboard.

These are the results obtained during this testing (only a small part of the tables is given, for more details see. this article, however, in German).

The results, it should be noted, are ambiguous, plus, testers also note that the system is not quite stable in some test applications. As for the conclusions set out in this article, I suggest you familiarize yourself with them, I would only like to note that after reading the results of this testing, the thought crept into my head that it is no coincidence that the first implementation of cards based on XGI Volari Duo V8 Ultra chips has been shipped so far. in not as massive quantities as one might expect. The reasons, in my opinion, are simple: a slightly overpriced for such a solution, plus, for mass deliveries, a new revision of the chip with slightly lower power consumption would be more appropriate.

However, sooner or later, solutions on the Volari Duo V8 Ultra will appear in our video laboratory, after which it will be possible to judge the capabilities of new products from XGI professionally. At this hour, we have to state the bare facts: there is no talk of the massive nature of cards on the Volari Duo V8 Ultra yet, although the groundwork for the future has certainly been made.
