GLORIAD is an information network that will connect Russia, China and America
Soon scientists from the USA, China and Russia will be able to exchange data at a speed of 155 megabits per second. In addition, for the first time, a new computer network will directly connect the scientific communities of Russia and China.
It is assumed that the network will start operating in January next year (the official opening ceremony will take place on January 12 in Beijing). The network will have a ring topology and will cover research centers in Chicago, Amsterdam, Moscow, Siberia, Beijing and Hong Kong.
American National Center for Supercomputer Applications Receives $ 2.8 Million Grant from the US National Science Foundation. This amount will be spent over three years to create the American segment of the network. Amounts of the same size will be spent on the Russian and Chinese network segments.
The network will be called GLORIAD – Global Ring Network for Advanced Application Development. It is assumed that among the main areas of research will be the prediction of natural disasters, the preservation of nuclear materials, joint space research, monitoring of earthquakes. The network will not use the nodes of the transmission of Internet traffic. The network provides the ability to conduct video conferencing and monitoring of high-tech equipment.
The creation of GLORIAD became possible thanks to the laying of a fiber-optic cable between Russia and China, which was completed a few months ago. Scientists from the USA and Russia have been exchanging data using a computer network for several years. This year it is planned to increase the network bandwidth several times and bring it to 10 gigabits per second.
