Banias, Dothan, Johan, Efficeon: a little about the power consumption of mobile processors

Despite Intel’s postponed announcement of mobile Pentium M chips with 90 nm Dothan core to the second quarter of 2021, the topic of the emergence of new generations of low-cost laptop processors is still relevant and does not leave the pages of the network press. Recently, the Japanese source PC Watch published interesting preliminary data, which considers not only the already known data on the Dothan core, but also provides information on the next generation of mobile processors from Intel, with a 65 nm Jonah core. The day before yesterday, in our news, we already published a selection about the timing of the release of new processor cores, and today we will try to make a dry extract of facts and rumors on the topic of energy consumption.

For some time now, the performance issues of mobile processors have appeared as a minor factor, while the most important issue has come out on top – power consumption and heat dissipation of chips. As you know, TDP (Thermal Design Power), which is the nominal heat dissipation power of Intel processors of a particular class in the standard performance mode, for the current Pentium M (Banias) chips with a standard (not reduced) core voltage (1.35 V) is characterized by level of 24.5 W for older models and 22 W for younger models (1.3 GHz / 1.4 GHz). Undoubtedly, this is a significant improvement compared to the Mobile Pentium 4-M, the older versions of which have a TDP of 30 W.

TDP for the first Dothan processors will be even more impressive. According to preliminary data, upcoming 1.80 GHz, 1.70A GHz and 1.60A GHz versions of Pentium M chips will have a TDP level of 21 W. However, the idyll will not last long: planned for the fourth quarter of 2021, Dothan chips with support for a 533 MHz system bus for the Alviso system logic set will have a heat dissipation power already at the level of 30 W. For example, the 2.13 GHz Pentium M chip with a Dothan core, scheduled for release in late 2021, will have a TDP of 27 watts.

It is, of course, still too early to speak about the energy characteristics of the next generation of Intel mobile processors, based on Jonah core in compliance with 65 nm technical process standards, which are expected to appear in the second half of 2021, however, industrial sources say that the heir to the Dothan core will have a TDP level of 45 W.

The DTR line of Pentium 4 processors, which is currently represented by variants on the Northwood core and has a TDP of 75 W, will be updated in the second quarter of 2021, when the Mobile Pentium with the Prescott core will be presented. Rumor has it that the TDP of this series of chips will increase to 90W. About TDP core Tejas, which will replace Prescott, even rough data is not yet available.

Now – data on low-voltage (Low Voltage) and ultra-low-voltage (Ultra Low Voltage) versions of Pentium M with Dothan core.
The current LV and ULV Pentium M chips have a TDP of 12W and 10W, respectively. The announcement of the Dothan core will reduce these indicators, respectively, to 7 W and 5 W, however, the upcoming transition to support for the system bus with a frequency of 533 MHz will undoubtedly raise the power consumption of the chips. However, as far as we can judge from the available information, the Ultra Low Voltage version of Pentium M based on Dothan core with 533 MHz FSB support is not planned for release yet; it is possible that even the Jonah core in ULV hypostasis will support the 400 MHz system bus.

In this regard, the declared characteristics of the second generation of Efficeon processors from Transmeta look very tempting. As you know, already in the second half of 2021, when Fujitsu masters the production of the Efficeon chip with 90 nm process technology, Transmeta promises to surprise the public with the announcement of 2 GHz TM8800, TM8500 and TM8820 chips with a TDP of 25 W, and there will be a 1.8 GHz version at all ” keep within 12 W. Combined with the rather successful LongRun2 energy-saving technology, such processors look very attractive for manufacturers of lightweight and economical notebooks. It is quite possible that if the announced production times, delivery volumes and the second generation of Efficeon chips provide a sufficient level of performance, then Transmeta will finally be able to become a significant player in the market of mobile processors.
