In the footsteps of the IEDM: Texas Instruments single-electron transistors and 5nm NEC elements
At the IEDM (International Electron Devices Meeting) conference, Texas Instruments in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne and the US Air Force Research Center (U.S Air Force Research Laboratory) reports on the development of a method for using single electron transistors (SETs) to perform logic functions. In their presentation, scientists at TI presented the use of a combination of SET and a CMOS process (CMOS – complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor, CMOS) in devices they called SETMOS. Researchers believe that the SETMOS technology will allow in the future to overcome the limitations on the size of the basic elements of semiconductor logic caused by the discrete properties of the electric charge. According to some estimates, reaching theoretical limits is possible within 10-15 years from now.
According to the data presented, SETMOS devices exhibit the effect of the Coulomb blockade, like traditional single-electron transistors, however, it is possible to achieve much higher values of electric current (the main problem of SET is in insufficient electron mobility, respectively, in a small value of the possible current).
Meanwhile, NEC has announced that it is developing what it claims to be the smallest gate transistor at just 5nm. Into a semiconductor chip of ordinary size (about 1 sq. cm.) can fit up to 40 billion. of such transistors, which means that it will be possible to assemble a system in an ordinary desktop, the performance of which will be comparable to the performance of an average supercomputer.
Unfortunately, it is not yet known when the company will be able to start production of such transistors and whether processors based on them will be efficient enough to create compact supercomputers – after all, as you know, small sizes alone are not enough.
