ProMOS will launch its own DRAM chips. After purchasing Mosel Vitelic

Following ProMOS’s final refusal to provide manufacturing facilities to Elpida yesterday, the company announced early this morning that it has acquired 50% of Mosel Vitelic, 100% of United Memories, a North American company (Mosel’s chip development division), and all Mosel patents relating to RAM and flash memory chips, as well as rights to manufacture DRAM products.

All these acquisitions will cost ProMOS $ 120 million., moreover, this amount will be deducted from Mosel’s accounts receivable, which, according to the Taiwan Stock Exchange, is about $ 264 million. So at the end of all transactions expected by the end of this month, Mosel will still owe ProMOS.

Well, now it becomes clear why ProMOS did not work out with Elpida: after receiving Mosel assets and technologies to pay off debt, the company will be able to produce its own DRAM and flash memory chips, without focusing on the terms of the Japanese firm. ProMOS plans to release 64-Mbit NOR flash memory chips at 0.18-micron standards in the second half of 2021 and develop chips of higher density at 0.12-micron standards.
