Philips and Samsung create UH-API: a universal consumer electronics programming interface

Philips and Samsung announced their intention to develop a new programming interface (API) specifically for consumer electronics devices. The interface, called by the companies UH-API (Universal Home Application Programming Interface), is designed to improve the compatibility of devices from different manufacturers and, in the future, to simplify (making uniform) the process of creating new products and, in the future, to ensure their interaction.

Also, UH-API will open a new niche for software creators, system integrators and vendors to create their own applications and programs.
Initially, the two semiconductor divisions Philips and Samsung are expected to join forces to create UH-API specifications, and market the first products with UH-API support (including Philips’ Nexperia chip and Samsung HDTV chipsets). Draft UH-API specifications to be published in Q1 2021.

The UH-API is expected to describe a set of programming interfaces for configuring and controlling audio and video components of semiconductor chips used in consumer electronics, as well as possibly a set of functions for communicating with major operating systems. The UH-API is targeted at analog and digital TVs, desktop set-top boxes, DVD players and recorders, PVP (the emerging class of personal video recorders), home media servers and audio systems.
