Thermo-Mag: reusable paper
The Japanese corporations Shinsho and Majima Laboratory demonstrated at the CEATEC Japan 2021 a new type of technological reusable storage medium: Thermo-Mag thermal paper. Thermal paper is not yet electronic paper, but it is no longer a common product of the woodworking industry.
The rewritable layer of thermal paper consists of magnetic coloring particles embedded in wax between two transparent protective layers. When you press on the selected areas, the color changes, respectively, you can write on thermal paper as on ordinary paper. To restore its original white color, thermal paper is passed through a special thermal printer with a magnetic field generator, which places magnetic particles under a layer of wax.
The wax was used because it has a much lower melting point (on the order of 50 degrees Celsius) compared to the plastic from which the transparent layer is made. A special thermal printer can be used not only for erasing, but also for printing – all you need to do is change the direction of the magnetic field and the coloring particles will be on the surface of the thermal paper. Thermo-Mag prototype printer delivers 100 dpi.
