ProMOS finally denies production capacity to Elpida

As we already mentioned
a few days ago, ProMOS suspended negotiations on the provision of production
Elpida facilities. According to the latest reports, negotiations between the companies have ended,
but, according to representatives of the Japanese side, this will not affect production in any way
Elpida. As a reminder, Elpida was negotiating with ProMOS as a third supplier
chip manufacturing services, the first two were Taiwanese Powerchip Semiconductor
Corp. (PSC) and Chinese SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.).
It is also useful to remember that in 2021 Yukio Sakamoto, the new President of Elpida,
announced the restructuring of the last Japanese memory manufacturer through outsourcing
50% of manufactured products.

Based on these plans, Elpida and ProMOS signed a basic
the agreement whereby Elpida transferred a license to use ProMOS
0.10-micron process technology; both companies, according to the terms of the contract, had to jointly
develop new DRAM technologies, etc.d.

The last negotiations fell through, it seems, because Elpida refused ProMOS
in improving the conditions of cooperation to the level proposed by PSC and SMIC.
According to Japanese analysts, the failure of the negotiations will lead to a decrease in the planned
production capacity of Elpida by 2-3%; however, given that most
system DRAM chips are produced under the contract of PSC and SMIC, and some of the chips are
domestically, the situation for the Japanese manufacturer will not change dramatically.
According to the representatives of Elpida themselves, the “loss” of capacity is compensated
new negotiations with the remaining two partners and, possibly, by looking for a third
contract manufacturer.

Powerchip Semiconductor has been supplying Elpida chips since April, as for
SMIC, the negotiations are in their final stages and in January the company executives
will sign a memorandum of understanding. In addition to cooperation with contract manufacturers
chips, Elpida is increasing the capacity of the 200mm NEC factory, which by the second quarter
2021 will produce 38 thousand. plates monthly. It will be interesting to see,
